Fayetteville's snow chances remain somewhat marginal as a weekend system approaches.

Earlier this week, we reported that Fayetteville had better than expected chances for snow once again this weekend. Well, we’re only like a day away from the weekend… so what’s the deal?

It depends who you ask right now.

As we have said many, many, many times when it comes to Fayetteville snow chances, there’s a lot that has to go right for it to ACTUALLY be snow. And the system that is approaching this weekend seems very confused about whether it wants to do those things or not.

We aren’t gonna go all science on you here, but you know the drill by now. The timing of when precipitation hits, vs. when the air is cold enough (both aloft and on the ground) are really on a narrow edge this time around.

Another problem is whether the precipitation will even hit our area. There’s some increasing certainty that some sort of moisture will reach our area. But even just one day out, the outlook is still hazy about exactly what kind.

The National Weather Service said “Latest snow accumulation forecasts for Friday night and Saturday morning including the official NWS forecast across NC as well as the probability of 1 inch and 2 inches of snow in central NC.”

As always, let’s head to the experts and say what they have to say about Fayetteville snow chances right now.

  • UPDATE: 5:45 p.m. - Small Amounts of Snow Expected

  • There's Likely Going to Be Something

Allan Huffman’s projections are always strong. But even he’s a little uncertain right now. Most of our area falls into his “1-2 inches of snow” range, but it’s still dicey.

  • Here's the System in Question

You’ve probably heard about the solid pop the Northeast is going to get this weekend. It’s related to this system too. Timing and location are all in question.

  • Some Model Support

There could be a fairly decent chance that this will stay south enough that it gives us a little bit of something.

  • Increasing Hope

Our good friend Chick Jacobs points out that the GFS model is showing a solid pop coming in early Saturday morning.
