After some buzz for the past couple of months, it looks like a David Bowie biopic is happening. However, Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones, has disputed initial reports.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, principal photography for Stardust will begin in June 2019 with Johnny Flynn cast as Bowie. Jena Malone and Marc Maron have also been cast in the film that is based around Bowie first coming to the U.S. in 1971 and inventing the Ziggy Stardust persona.
This news, however, was new to Jones who responded to the story on Twitter stating, “I think this journalist needs to do some investigative reporting. Pretty certain nobody has been granted music rights for ANY biopic…I would know.”
Jones is actually not to keen on any Bowie biopic being made.
In December 2018, he took to Twitter and posted the sardonic tweet, “They insist I take a meeting on a biopic about my dad. Who do I say must play him?” Jones then lists Idris Elba, Peter Dinklage, Meryl Streep and Gilbert Gottfried as potential casting choices. In the extended comments of the original tweet, Jones wrote, “I’m gunning for Idris. He can do ANYTHING!”
Considering Jones’ response to the Stardust news, it’ll be interesting to see how things develop between now and the projected start of the production in June 2019.
